View From The North Endzone

Posted by srr50 on September 1st, 2008 under Football

52-10 will look pretty damn good from any angle in DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium-Joe Jamail Field-Taco Bell Jumbotron, but the intitial impression from seats dead in the middle of the new north endzone addition, is that it is a great place to watch a game from.

You are close enough to the action that the players don’t look like pieces from the old electric football game, and high up enough to give you a coach’s film view of the action as it unfolds. You can see every play develop, from the pattern of line blocking, to the rotation of the defense, as well as being able to anticipate when and where an offensive hole will open up. And it also affords you a terrific view of the replay on Jumbotron, so you can get a closer view of the play.

Reporter

A couple of quick impressions:

* Colt McCoy did a terrific job of running through his progressions — which was nice since from the coach’s video view it sure didn’t look like any of our WR’s were getting initial separation at the snap.

* And as Henry James points out, our defensive line did pressure the QB

* When Colt McCoy ran in with 3:25 to go in the 2nd quarter to make it 28-3, the season ticket holders on the lower west side declared the game officially over and packed it in.

We got pressure on the QB?

Missed that. And I did not pack it in before halftime.

  2. You didn’t pack it in, Navy, but a helluva lot of others did. The upper deck stayed pretty much full, and the east side remained intact, but the lower west side had a lot of aluminum chairs disguised as fans in the 2nd half.

  3. After the Colt TD before half, we didn’t pack it in, but rather beat the rush to the alumni center for a few beers before heading back in at the 3rd qtr to see the rest of the game.

  4. Rusty Smith was in the shit all night, until they yanked him. He was throwing under pressure on about 80% of this throws.

seriously, only a fool couldnt tell he was running for his life. Just because it isnt in the box score doesnt mean it didnt happen.

  6. “but rather beat the rush to the alumni center for a few beers before heading back in at the 3rd qtr to see the rest of the game.”

Whatever. Haven’t seen that many empty seats since the ‘83 Rockets won only 12 games. FYI – There’s very little chance of going to the alumni center, drinking anything of substance and returning to your seats by the start of the 3rd quarter. Go to a sports bar instead of the game and give your tickets to real fans.

  7. I don’t get why so-called fans would rather drink beer outside the stadium than watch the Horns inside the stadium. I was seated before 5:00PM, stayed until we sang The Eyes after the game, and loved every minute of it.

My seats are also in the NEZ and I’m very pleased with the view. The stadium is simply incredible and I can’t wait to see how much noise we can generate against Arkansas.

  8. Call me crazy. I like to have a beer or three at half time, particularly when it’s 95 degrees with sorority dress clinging levels of humidity. About 10,000 other so-called fans also find football and beer to have an appealing synergy in these conditions.

A lot of those seats on the west side were empty to start the game. As usual, some of the big donors between the 20s didn’t make the home opener. Leaves plenty of room for me to walk back into the stadium in the third quarter and snag an empty chairback on the 40 yard line.

And I too enjoyed every minute of it.

  9. Vasherized, I’m referring to those who leave and don’t come back, or don’t ever make into the stadium to begin with because they’d rather drink.

To me, it’s too much hassle to leave and come back, but that’s your right. I drank a few beers at a tailgate before the game, and a little wine at dinner, after the game. I figure if the team can tough out the heat on the field, I can do so in the stands. I can’t think of anyplace I’d rather be not drinking beer than DKR.

  10. We have season tickets in the new upper deck (section 115, row 14) but decided to sneak into section 19 for the opener.

What’s the atmosphere in the new upper deck? Particularly, do folks stand/get loud? I prefer to stand (not sit) and stay for the entire game.

  11. The atmosphere reflected the opponent and how the game was going. Enthusiasm at the begining, lots of standing up for “big” moments, but fairly tame most of the game.

  12. About what I expected, as the student section was pretty tame as well. But my question about standing still, uh, stands. Will I get yells of “down in front!” if we stand throughout a game? If that’s a question better left until after Arkansas, I guess we’ll sneak into the student section one more time.

Everybody would love to be halfway up on 50. But I like high end zone, too. You really do get a fascinating view of the game.

Yeah your right, penders teams were at least fun to watch play. Barnes offense is pretty bad not as bad as Tom’s but its all relative to who is watching the worst offense in Texas history.

“His teams did not play D, did not box out, and were generally unsound in the fundamentals of the game.”

Our hoops team is the basketball version of Major League.

    Jake Taylor = Damion James
    Pedro Cerrano = Dexter Pittman
Willie Mays Hays = Avery Bradley
    Roger Dorn = Justin Mason
Isuro Tanaka (Major League II) = Dogus Balbay
Rube Baker (Major Leauge II) = Jordan Hamilton

If Craig Way starts drinking whiskey during the broadcasts, it’ll complete the analogy.

Nice job Hiphop. Very nice to win what is probably the toughest game on the schedule handily, although the Hawks obviously caught UT at a good time.

The Morningstar FT was terrible and hilarious. He said the ball was wet, which clearly means Texas was cheating somehow. Would the second chance off balance leaner

I don’t think McCoy played anywhere near the level of Suh and the numbers make it clear that he did not. Suh had twice as many tackles (77-31), sacks (11-5) and nearly tackles for loss (22-14.5). Suh also broke up 10 passes, if he gets stonewalled on the rush he doesn’t allow it to take

EP, I get your point, but I don’t think the fact that Texas hasn’t won a tourney came as an underdog doesn’t support it. Teams are favored because they are better. The odds that they win are greater than those who are not favored. It’s not like Texas goes into games with a secret weapon

Good write up, hiphop. I love the versatitility of the Morris twins on defense. Xavier Henry is probably the key to a big run in the tournament. If he starts hitting open looks, the inside game will really open up. Post to post passing is fun to watch.

I don’t think it’s a case of RB not being able to coach, or doing a poor job of coaching. If you read the entirety of Katz’ blog post, he clearly sounds like a coaching searching for answers — answers that come in the form of players contributing, doing what they are coached to do.

I don’t think we have to win the SEC tourny necessarily. If we make it to the SEC Tourny championship game and have won about 20 games, I would say a tourny bid would look likely. But that is a pretty big task. I know no one cares about the NIT, but that wouldnt be
