No J’Covan Brown This Fall

Posted by Z on August 21st, 2008 under Basketball

BevoBeat bears the bad news.

Rick Barnes statement on J’Covan Brown:

J’Covan Brown will not be enrolled at Texas during the upcoming Fall semester. However, we do expect J’Covan to earn admission to The University of Texas and join our basketball program at some point.

J’Covan Brown statement:

I’m very disappointed that I will not be at The University of Texas this fall. I did not get done what I needed to academically. I will work as hard as I can to make sure that I am able to earn a spot at The University of Texas as soon as possible.

We at the Carnival hope J’Covan can get his stuff together.

We are also hearing some potential good news on some other prospects via our hoops kaffeklatsch. Trips may have some news for us soon. Stay tuned.

Awesome. Chance Mock is going to kick his ass.

  2. Are we ever going to have any guard depth? Who is supposed to back up Balbay now? Mason? Bah.

  3. Dawg, that video is huge. I bet we gain 2 toughness points every time our boys watch that, and they probably air it all during practice (I know I would)

CA, Mason was ranked higher in the NCAA stats in A/TO ratio than DJ last year. (You can look it up.)

That doesn’t mean I would trade Mason for DJ… just that if he’s the second option, they can do a lot worse.

  5. Agreed, I was just thinking of how thin we’ll be to the point where AJ and Mason will both have to play 30-35 minutes for us again then wear down in the postseason.

Yeah, suddenly it’s not looking a whole lot different than last year. Hopes are high that Ward will contribute, but supposedly that’s on the defensive end.

The difference is that I think this will not be a three-guard lineup. Too many potential contributors on the front line not to figure out a way to use them.

  7. I hope they throw Ward in for 20 minutes a night even if it is just energy/defensive effort. I know Barnes will sit your ass for a week for mistakes, but I think he needs to start thinking about letting guys like Smith just play through it against some of the weaker teams.

I understand Smith does his own thing but is proving a point to him worth your better players killing themselves all year?

I dunno. Seems to me that it’s worse to tell the rest of your guys that you mean what you say regarding playing time, then go back on your word because it’s expedient.

I don’t know what Smith’s exact problem is, obviously, but I do see that when he does play, he almost always manages to shoot. Craig Winder used to do the same thing, and he got the same kind of mop-up minutes. But he played when Mason got hurt, and I noticed that he had stopped shooting it on contact.

20 minutes for Ward as a freshman sounds like a lot, but Royal Ivey got more than that.

Maybe he should go by BalJay… or better yet Ball’J?

DJ, AJ, J’Covan… can a brother get a rimshot?

  10. 20 does seem high, I just kind of picked a number. Whatever still allows Mason and Ball’J to still be playing hard in March.

“I dunno. Seems to me that it’s worse to tell the rest of your guys that you mean what you say regarding playing time, then go back on your word because it’s expedient.”

I understand that. I mean, I get why Barnes does it. I think if it was me I’d rather tell my guys that they can roll with me on this one or risk injury or fatigue related losses later.

Rick has his finger on the pulse much more so than I do, obviously, and I trust his judgment enough to not throw a fit.

Nate, I think your argument is pretty solid for the SEC, Big 12 and Pac 10 but not so much on the Big 10. If you look at the 2009 Sagarin strength of sked: ND-37, Ohio St-50, Iowa-41, Penn St-73. Not so sure joining the Big 10 really helps ND’s chances. With

Kiffin’s father is a great coach, but the rest of that staff isn’t. Orgeron and Kiffin are both good, dirty recruiters and mediocre to poor gameday coaches.

How important is that in college football? How good of a gameday coach is Mack Brown? Greg Davis?

Orgeron is actually a damn fine defensive line coach,

Always impassioned. I agree with you that his delay had to do with not being eligible to sign rather than awaiting for the smoke to settle. However, the point is not with motive but with opportunity. Maybe the kid and his family don’t know anything and just trudged along with his planned

I get what you’re saying, but honestly, it’s a cop out. Period. If the AD was to actually commit some resources into building a program, we would be competitive and probably would even give K-State a run for its money. We may never be a KU, but we sure as hell wouldn’t

Totally agree re: RJ. I’m hesitant to shout it from the mountain tops until he does it against a contending team. So far his success has been against 2nd tier teams.

Ginobili is just incredible to watch right now. Just goes to show how hurt he really must have been last season.

The Arkansas Razorbacks’ 2010 signing class did a good job of filling areas of need and adding size, speed, and talent to Bobby Petrino’s roster.

The major recruiting services did not rank the Hogs among the top 25 recruiting classes, while the Max Emfinger and Tom Lemmings of the recruiting world did think more highly
