Mean, Nasty and Ornery FAU Plans To Beat Up Wimpy Longhorns

Howard Schnellenbeger has never lacked for confidence, and he has never been shy about expressing it. Howard thinks his Florida Atlantic Owls will be good this year, good enough to come into Austin and win. Of course he also thinks that the Longhorns are a bunch of wussies

The Owls were 8-5 last year, won the Sun Belt and went to a bowl for the first time. FAU defeated Memphis 44-27 in the New Orleans Bowl.

 
Howard Schnellenberger is 1-2-1 as a coach against Texas.

FAU returns 18 starters off of that team, and will test the young Texas secondary from the start. Junior QB Rusty Smith threw for over 3,600 yards last year with 32 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions.

But of course Howard thinks its on defense that FAU will win. Said Howard, We’ll put three hats on them and make them not want to get up, that’s the way to beat Texas.”

    It must take some interesting tactics to motivate his young charges that couldn’t get into into FSU, Florida, Miami, Central Florida, South Florida, and Dade County Correctional.

    Didn’t this “old people” just win a conference co-championship in Florida Atlantic’s 2nd season of Div.1 football?

    Coach Schnellenberger has done a fabulous job of building that program. The talent gap will be too wide to give them a real chance at a win, but I bet we get their best game. They’ll leave it all on the field.

    Are there even Owls in South Florida? Philly, sure. Houston, I suppose. But Florida? I really doubt it.

    I guess neither Hummingbirds, Algae nor Cocaine sound as intimidating.

    Schnellenberger is an interesting guy. He has been around forever, and he elaborates his resume some (for example he claims to have played for Bear Bryant at Kentucky, when Bryant was gone to TAMU by the time Schnelly was eligible for the varsity), but he has seen some stuff.

    He played for Blanton Collier (who won an NFL championship for the Browns in the ’60s) at Kentucky. He coached on Bryant’s staff at Bama in the early ’60s (coached Joe Namath), and then moved on to George Allen’s Ram staff.

    He coached for Shula at Miami (was there for the 17 – 0 season), was head coach of the Colts for a season and a half (traded Unitas), was fired and returned to Miami.

    He really did build the Miami program (lost to Texas in 1981), rebuilt Louisville, and crashed spectacularly at OU. He is probably the last coach in America who remembers using water deprivation as a training technique, coached single platoon football, remembers the single wing from the first time around, and actually played without a facemask.

    Schnellenberger sucked so bad at OU, they thought hiring Blake was a good idea. Blake sucked so bad, the AD got fired and they hired Stoops.

    Oh, okay…maybe we’ll try to play more than one game this year, so you don’t have to base everything on 60 minutes of football.
