I’d put Miller and Beasley 1 and 2. Orakpo is still more potential than production. I’ve seen Miller and The Bease dominate with my own eyes before. Can you think of a game and tell yourself “Man I’m glad we had Orakpo today, we’d of lost otherwise.” Even with Beasley’s relative youth he still has one of those games — OSU last year.

Andy Maples
The first three are no brainers. Three years ago the coaching staff said that WillyMo was the best athlete on the team, and he made that obvious in the second half of last year. Word out of camp is that Eberflus has almost invented a new position for Moore, he’ll be playing near the line many times, lots of blitzing, lots of moving him around. Weatherspoon is the best linebacker I’ve ever seen in black and gold, which is certainly a tallest midget in the circus sort of thing. Something clicked towards the end of the year with Hood, and like Zo Williams, he is a disrupter, but unlike Zo, he can actually hold his ground against your average Big 12 guard.
Sulak is what he is, great motor, great edge speed, but a tweener who struggles some against NFL caliber tackles. Chavis is better rounded and is probably the most likely to take a huge step forward this year. The $64,000 question on defense is whether anyone from the talented d-line recruiting class from last year makes the leap. My money is on Earnhardt or Hamilton, even though Keck was the highest profile of the bunch. He started at LB and is still a little beanpoley, looks like a Sulak clone to me. And, of course, Superman himself, Brian Coulter, who was a victim of the Florida State scandal and subsequent schollie loss.
Gettis and Bridges are the best corner combo we’ve had in 10 years, the defensive secondary goes 3 deep. I didn’t even include Moye, but he could obviously get on the field this year, and word out of camp is that Zaviar Gooden looks really strong…sort of surprised you guys weren’t on him. This looks to be the best secondary at Mizzou in at least 25 years.
The achilles heel is depth at d-tackle, unless Maples/Hamilton/Resonno step up, and depth at LB, especially if Alexander isn’t healthy, and Alexander is never healthy. I’m not convinced that LB is a strength, fortunately, there are no more power running teams in the Big 12….
Offense in while.

The difference between a 10+ win system and Big 12 championship trip and 8 wins and several mid-Missouri suicides rests on the offensive line. This is THE weak link on the team. Two new starters and absolutely no experience or even age in the backup ranks. I couldn’t even find a backup to list outside of Fisher and true freshman Hoch. Terrifying.
The difference in the 2007 and 2008 Tigers was that we finally established a credible ground threat. Arkansas’s interesting No Men In the Box defensive “effort” aside, that threat came primarily from end arounds to Maclin. The threat of that end around significantly slowed the rush, and kept defenses from successfully running cover 2 and 3 against us.
The second key to the season will be whether Jared Perry, ittybitty freshman phenom, or Jared Perry, Alligator Arm Sophomore shows up. All he has to do is run seam and corner routes to keep defenses from completely focusing on Maclin.
I hope to see Coffman downfield more this year, his ability while the ball is in the air is truly extraordinary, much, much better than Rucker. He’s not quite as quick as Rucker, but he just doesn’t need to be open to catch balls.
Rumors from camp are that Derrick Washington is going to be prominently displayed in the passing game, both from the slot and the backfield; I’m sure Christensen is cackling gleefully at some triple reverse flea flicker that he’ll pull out of his bag against Nebraska….

Scipio—unless Muschamp is a miracle worker Bobino’s jump the gun fillings and total lack of coverage skills will eventually cancel out his tremendous attitude and leadership skills. Norton missed the spring game with yet another “injury” and that alone would start Bobino over him in fall camp. We need production at MLB if we stay in a three LB unit and truthfully neither Bobino or Norton supplies enough to merit starting in a quality 4-3.
It’s beginning to sound like Muschamp is laying some groundwork for a multiple nickel that will basically eliminate the need for a triangle MLB. Involving Rak and Acho in two point stances while occasionally dropping Kindle’s hand in the dirt could very possibly be leading to a version of the old numbers defense.
I really like the direction Muschamp is steering us and I got that nasty feeling that we are finally going to play deserving numbers on defense. Muschamp is very good at providing opportunity/preparation for each player to earn trust which translates into quality snaps once trust has been established in practice. Muschamp is also providing a great opportunity for any player not willing to pay the price to go see grandma and not make their way back.
I’m not sure that youth was a strong factor on my list as much as play making talent dotted my selections. I will admit that you don’t often find as many young players that completely blend in when scrimming the older vets as we had last fall/this spring. Usually the youth sticks out like a sore thumb because of insecurity and the speed of the game but Hix, Huey, Acho, and Irby (among others) bit the bullet while facing up to a close-up. Others like Carter, Marshall, Snow, Robinson, and McGaskey have a variety of weakness in position skills to develop before they could become production players at a very high level. The difference is time—they have time.

You should be able to run all day against cover 2 or cover 3. That means you’re only facing 5 in the box, assuming 10 personnel. The problem with your running game was simply that Tony Temple was just a so-so back. Ignoring his ridiculous stats against Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl, I’ve always felt that Temple was the one player holding Missouri back.

For Tech as of practices from 8/7/08:
Offense
Crabtree
Harrell
Rylan Reed
Vasquez
Detron Lewis
Eric Morris
Shannon Woods
Ed Britton
Stephen Hamby
Marlon Winn
Brandon Carter
Baron Batch
Harrison Jeffers
Shawn Byrnes
Mickey Okafor
Lyle Leong
Aaron Crawford
Lonnie Edwards
Chris Olson
Tramain Swindall
Notes: R. Reed protects Harrell’s backside. This offense sucks if that position does. Jeffers, the freshman RB from OK, has been very impressive, especially the first two days of pads. He’s the best pure runner Leach has ever had here. They wanted to redshirt him, but he’s doing everything he can to make that not possible. We’ll see if he hits a wall. Hamby would probably be the guy that most Tech fans would disagree with. However, his versatility as a backup is a luxury for any team. He was the starting center coming out of spring, but when they rest Reed, he’s been sliding over to guard and Vasquez has been playing tackle. Hamby has great feet and has spelled Carter and Byrnes in the past when they’ve had matchup problems with quick, interior pass rushers. This is an option most teams don’t have.
Defense
Wall
Whitlock
B. Williams
McBath
Henley
Hines
Duncan
Bront Bird
D. Charbonnet
LA Reed
Sam Fehoko
Richard Jones
Chris Perry
M. Williams
Sesay
LaRon Moore
David Neill
Daniel Howard
Jackson Richards
Jake Ratliff
Notes: McKinner Dixon declared ineligible yesterday. Sesay is moving up the depth chart quickly, and for Tech’s defense to be improved by any significant margin, he needs to work out and be receiving most of the snaps in conference. Charbonnet is currently playing better than Anthony Hines and may take his spot. Sam Fehoko is one of the top three LBs on this team and needs to be on the field. Reed looks like he’s been playing CB his whole career after 4 days of practice. This position was a huge question mark for us going into the fall. Neill is a redshirt freshman DT that people have forgot about. He’s outplayed the highly touted Perry to date. Jackson Richards is a junior DE at Southlake Carroll that has already committed to Tech and is expected to be a top 10 recruit in the state. He can’t get here fast enough.

I agree that Temple wasn’t all that great. Actually, if you look at his career, you might conclude that he was the type of athlete who needed more than a week between games to recuperate. He had some of his best games in bowls and after long layoffs.
While I’ll be the first to praise Christensen’s creativity, his use of empty backfields last year came back to bite him big time in the Big 12 championship. Stoops had obviously figured out that when we went empty backfield with Temple in the slot that (1) the middle of the field was unchallenged and (2) nobody was ever going to throw the ball to Temple. In those situations, he moved Lofton out of the middle and over the other slot receiver, usually Maclin. Christensen never adapted by, say, running Daniel on planned draws or sending Rucker or Coffman up the middle seam. We have to be able to threaten runs between the tackles to hold the linebackers.
I don’t think that cover 2 is necessarily easy to run against, especially in a zone read scheme. In base cover 2, you can have 7 in the box, but also have the CBs spying as they have no deep responsibility.

I note with interest your rating of Batch. I had wondered what his future looked like at Tech, realizing he had had some injuries. I assume he’s finally coming on in a big way?
dedfischer said:
August 8th, 2008 at 6:03 am
One other note on Tech, Seth Doege will more than likely end up being the all time passing yardage leader in NCAA history. It’s not necessarily a function of him being that good (he’s pretty good, though, for a true freshman), but more from Taylor Potts sucking. It’s like having Jeff George or Ryan Leaf run your offense. He’s been good for about 2 or 3 picks a day this fall, while Doege has been steadily improving.

Sam Acho is fun to watch at practice. Cosby was yelling at him for all his hitting and involvement at the end of plays. He stripped Chiles at the end of a run and seemed intent on becoming involved in every play.
I’m not sure how Melton is ahead of Acho and Jones but whatever. I haven’t even seen a full-pads practice so I can’t judge.

dedfischer said:

DBH,
Batch is a guy I noted in my preview. If you sat down and drew up a RB for this offense, it would like him. However, injuries have limited him, and when he does play, he looks explosive at times and very average at others. His natural instincts as a RB seem to be an issue. I read reports that he has a tendency to just run to the designed hole and ends up missing cutbacks and such. He’ll play, but if Jeffers keeps impressing and Woods appears back to form, his reps may be cut down. Crawford seems to be the guy that is falling back in the pack.

vvn8bs said:

KU fans love Kerry Meier more than Mangino loves Crisco. Which is hard to believe, I know.
Actually, Meier plays the role of Coffman nicely in their offense. Pinkel and Mangino both realize the importance of the large possession guys in the spread. For some reason, Leach prefers his slot receivers in shrinky-dink size, which I think is a significant hindrance to keeping the chains moving.

Last year, Tech did a decent job of converting on 3rd down, I believe they were in the top 20. IN 2005 and 2006, though, they were abysmal, around 36%. For an offense that prolific, that is awful. I suspect that Crabtree is responsible for much of that upgrade.
Simple physics dictates that 4 yard slants and hooks work better with 6′6″ targets than with 5′6″ targets.
vvn8bs said:
August 8th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Don’t get me wrong, Welker and Amendola are great, but having a couple big tactical weapons is very useful for short yardage situations. Not only as targets, but your bubble screens work better when you have a Coffman or a Rucker leading the charge.
dedfischer said:
August 8th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Welker’s senior year in 2003, we converted 52% of our third downs, one of the best in the country. The next season after Welker graduated, we dropped back down to 47%. Welker makes $5 million a year converting 3rd downs.
kuelguapo said:
August 8th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
as nothing more than an educated guess, i’d say part of why tech’s 3rd down conversion percentage had been so low in the past is because they go for it so much on 4th down that they don’t necessarily have to try to get it all on 3rd. again, i’m not backing that up w/any statistics – mostly b/c i really don’t feel like tracking them down – but it seems like relatively sound logic to me ::shrug::

Andrew Gachkar rising. Was a special teams star as true freshman LB last year; this offseason had a little problem that required 20 hours of surgery and a rib removed, and is back on the two deep. I assumed he was going to RS this year.
Jerrell Jackson rising, Wes Kemp falling. Looks like Jackson is going to play…we were his only offer out of Houston. How does that happen? June Jones couldn’t use any receivers?

Tech Update:
Rising is Jackson Richards the soon-to-be junior DE from Southlake Carroll. 3 RBs averaged almost 10 yards per carry in practice yesterday.

I am a Mack Brown disciple: only positives! That’s why our depth charts typically list four starters at each position.

“I don’t think that cover 2 is necessarily easy to run against, especially in a zone read scheme. In base cover 2, you can have 7 in the box, but also have the CBs spying as they have no deep responsibility.”
Cover 2 against 10 personnel, you’re going to see 5 in the box. If you have 10 personnel on the field, and you see 7 in the box, Missouri is passing the ball.

Tech Update: Leach scheduled a 2nd practice today after the first one because Harrison Jeffers ran all over the first team defense behind the scout team OL.
I guess the silver lining here is that Tech may finally have a it’s first RB since Bam that can break an arm tackle, and Jeffers is making a strong case not to redshirt.

One guy who did stand out on defense was Sesay. He’s jumped up on the big board to the spot between Charbonnet and Reed. He’ll be starting in Ratliff’s place by conference for sure, but most of our guys think he will be starting by the opener.

Offense (20)
Colt McCoy
Cedric Dockery
Kyle Hix
John Chiles
Fozzy Whitaker
Vondrell McGee
Malcolm Williams
Chris Hall
Adam Ulatoski
Michael Huey
Charlie Tanner
Quan Cosby
Jordan Shipley
Cody Johnson
Blaine Irby
Chris Ogbonnaya
Tray Allen
James Kirkendoll
Brandon Collins
Dan Buckner
I added Cody Johnson to the list and got rid of Webber. UT has needed a guy like Cody ever since they blew off Javorskie.
I moved Quan and Shipley down and Malcom Williams up since I can see him drawing a double team, being better over the middle, better blocker, and better on the 50-50 ball than Quan and Shipley. He might also be better for YAC on the 2 WR screen (not sure).
I have my doubts about DJ Monroe. He is really small (i.e. might be a good idea to redshirt to get a bit stronger so he is better equipped to deal with Div 1 hits) so I replaced him with Dan Buckner (who looks like he might back up Malcom Williams). If DJ gets to return kicks and punts, I would be forced to reevaluate.
Vvn8bs is right about using a TE type as the inside WR. These guys can seal block a DE or LB, can go over the middle much better than the smaller WRs (i.e. take hits better, block out better, have bigger and better hands, much bigger target), do better on 50-50 balls, block much better on 2 WR screen. Mizzou is on to something there (but calling them TEs does not make sense to me).
My hope is that UT deploys more personnel on O that are better suited for the run game and the short passing game rather than being optimized for the intermediate passing game.

TexasFootball,
“Norton missed the spring game with yet another “injury””.
Do you think Norton is faking injuries and, if so, why do you think that?
Muschamp has made it clear that his main emphasis will be defending the spread and that he is going to do with by using a nickel rather than the 4-3. If Kindle stays healthy, he is probably going to be rushing the passer as a DE much more than occasionally this season.
My question is: what about OU and A&M? Do you think the nickel is going to work well against those two most important games on the schedule? Presumably our base D will be a 4-3 in those games, right?

14. DB Sam Proctor
15. DL Frank Alexander
16. LB JR Bryant
17. DL Adrian Taylor
18. DB David Sims
19. DL RJ Washington
20. LB Mike Balogun
I have no concerns whatsoever about OU’s situation in the trenches. Simply put, that’s the home of our most significant talent and depth this year.
The LB position just flat sucks. Three guys on the big board who’ve never played a down at LB in D1. If Ryan Reynolds doesn’t stay healthy, we’re totally screwed at this position. Considering that guy has just gotten through his first completely healthy offseason, I am gnashing my teeth.

How are Stephen Good and Jermie Calhoun looking?
NateHeupel said:
August 17th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
The practice videos I’ve seen on Good are encouraging. He may not take a starting spot this year, but he’ll have one in 2009. The guy is quick, strong, and he finishes every single block.
As for Calhoun, he’s been good, but Justin Johnson’s actually been more impressive so far in fall camp. However, this could be because JJ came in for spring practices and got a LOT of reps with the first team offense with Murray and Brown rehabbing from knee surgeries.

RJ Washington is probably looking at a redshirt season. OU pretty much has their 2 deep set at this position. Coaches love English, Beal, and Alan Davis as far as the proven commodities, and they’re surprisingly big on RFr. Frank Alexander as the 4th guy in the mix.

I’d move Iglesias down to about 6 or 7. Value to the team? Definitely, as he’s taking over the #1 receiving target slot from Kelly. Almost more important, though, is protecting Bradford’s backside, which bumps up duke and Load-hold. Gresham is a beast and more talented than Iglesias, IMO.
Defense is kind of a no-brainer, although I’d move Clayton up. Would also move Blow-gun up if he could ever figure out assignments.

Of all the old posts to get randomly spammed by a suspect online ad for Seroquel (an anti-spychotic med that Nate takes regularly), I’m glad it was this one.
It’s interesting to look back at how certain players were valued by our Big 12 brethren heading into the season and weigh that against what actually happened.
Beal turned out to have a pretty nice season for OU and Nic Harris played like he had a dump in his pants all year.
For Texas, Ben Wells, John Chiles, DJ Monroe, Eddie Jones, and Montre Webber were all ghosts for differing reasons while Aaron Williams and Ogbannaya had huge years considering their relative expectation level.
F Crabtree.
