OU recruit pleads guilty to gun charges, allowed to enroll in school

Posted by on June 4th, 2008 under Football, Recruiting

No, really. That’s the headline.

From Sports Illustrated.

“We expect to have Josh on our roster this fall and look forward to a long and successful career for him both academically and on the football field,” Sooners coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. “He became involved in a situation at his school during his senior year that certainly has caused us concern. At the same time, we have personal knowledge of Josh through our recruiting contact with him and from personal references from his school and individuals of authority in his life.”

Barry Switzer added, “Hell, it was just a hand gun. It’s not like he was in an airport or waving an Uzi around a dormitory.”

The story also points out that the kid was expelled from his high-school but finished his coursework on the Internet. He spent a lot of time doing research on the Wikipedia.

  1. “He was expelled from school, but completed his high school degree online.”

Who completed his high school degree online?

  2. Sailor Ripley did. And then he enrolled in a cow college. And I’m not just saying that because it was founded by a cow.

  4. The right to bear arms. That’s the greatest picture ever.

  5. He’s going to be hard to tackle.

  6. Looks like a future source of Fulmer Cup points for the Sooners.

The guy is already a celebrity in Norman. The media was waiting for him when he got out of his limo yesterday and we got lots of fawning film and coverage of him on the sports last nite. He has long dredlocks that he dyed some sort of ugly-ass red. The gun charges are all a big joke to the ou alums.

First of all, the denizens of the Cthulhu Mythos are HORROR characters and NOT sci-fi characters. A very important distinction. I am sorry to have to point this out as it will certainly cause you great shame.

    Secondly, I, too, hate sooners!

Right here. While I admit to drawing great humor from watching UT fans judge OU for this after Mack Brown drew a quarter of his roster and half of his starters from the Travis County Jail for assorted high crimes and misdemeanors in 2007, this is something of its own.

It’s not like with Ryan “pump it up” Broyles or DeMarcus “burlington coat moron” Granger or with any arbitrarily chosen UT player. This isn’t just a college kid being a moron. The charges might’ve been reduced to misdemeanors, but that doesn’t change anything.

Honestly, I can see Stoops’ thinking on this one. Just get the kid away from his dumbass friends and he’ll be fine. It’s not unheard of. Sometimes, if you get a kid away from bad influences, you change the kid entirely.

I can also see a PacMan Jones fiasco with OU signing this kid only for him to turn into a PR nightmare. Some people are like shopping carts with a busted wheel. No matter what way you point them, they’re pulling a different direction.

Out of curiosity, does anyone here know the actual story (hyperbole aside)?

Nate, this is different than UT’s experience. Brown has been consistent- crimes with victims get players and recruits removed from the program.

The only perps that Stoops has removed from the team were the guys whose misdeeds put the program in jeapordy (Bomar, Quinn).

All programs have miscreants. The difference lies in what happens to them afterwards.

“Nate, this is different than UT’s experience.”

From the FIRST PARAGRAPH of my comment:
“While I admit to drawing great humor from watching UT fans judge OU for this…THIS IS SOMETHING OF ITS OWN.”
    From the second paragraph:
“It’s not like with Ryan “pump it up” Broyles or DeMarcus “burlington coat moron” Granger or with any arbitrarily chosen UT player. This isn’t just a college kid being a moron.”

I’m well aware that this is different than UT’s experience. The first two paragraphs were specifically targeted to 1) point out the hypocrisy of UT fans for whom the sheer quantity of criminals on the Longhorn team should keep you all humble, and 2) to point out that this isn’t some dumbass drug charge/larceny charge.

Out of curiosity, who was the victim here? Seriously. Jarboe never threatened anyone with the gun, he never took it into the school, and he wasn’t even seen handling it until he was LEAVING the school parking lot in his friend’s car, where the gun was originally pulled from. Help me see the victim here, because I don’t see one.

As for “what happens afterwards”, I admire UT’s approach of booting backups and walk-ons while protecting starters. It’s really unique in college football. Get real, Taylor. UT is a D1 football team trying to win championships, and doing the same things everyone else does to win…aside from hiring a competent offensive coordinator, of course.

I’m not saying this was a good decision. Even with the facts indicating that Jarboe merely handled a gun his friend stole, I still would rather he not be at OU until he’s been clean for a year, if at all.

What I am saying is that the other side of the coin, letting him come, isn’t unreasonable. If any of you were paying attention, you’d know that DeKalb County, where this happened, has been experiencing a record high murder rate over the last 6 months. Google “dekalb county murder rate” and you’ll see a youtube video of a news report specifically about the murder rate getting out of control. If you’re going to make a judgment call, make it in the right context.

  15. Womp Wah. One more reason to be scared of OU in Dallas this year: They may be kind of in possession, temporarily, of course, (Just because there’s it’s so dangerous around there, you know, because of all the things that have been going on. I mean, you watch the news, right?)of their friend’s, but not really their friend’s (That’s a long story, too, geesh, it’s like he took the thing without really asking or letting anyone know, and then had it with him for some time thereafter. He could have given it back any time, though, so I don’t see what the big fuss is all about. We don’t even know that he was going to keep it.) GUN.

Good news is, by the time they’ve explained to you that they’re angry with you and are going to utilize said GUN in an attempt to shorten your life a good deal, you’ll have already called the police, who will have promptly arrested the babbling man reaching in 1/100th real time for his piece.

What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. Outstanding “around the horn” type article. Can’t believe it’s almost 6 months until college football. The “U” from ESPN, while fun was nothing more than a 90 minute commercial for the greatness of Miami football. It would have been better if someone, other than a fan, took a critical look at that

    Nickel,

Yea, I think AB may move if he can get assurances he won’t slide past the teens. Going 25 or so is a much different story. I think he should probably come back if he’s in the mid-20’s but not having a clear vision of what the rookie salary scale might look like

  • GoHornsGo90 commented on the blog post Bradley or Hamilton?   1 hour, 33 minutes ago

The great thing about Joseph is he is a hard worker and great defender, just like Avery. This means he won’t be in the dog house like JH and JBC were all season fro their terrible defense and effort. He is also a perfect pick and roll/pick and pop PG who is smart and always

Don’t see Bradley as a kind of guy that goes through that kind of disappointment, sees how unprepared for the NBA he is, and goes to “get his” in the draft. Maybe Hamilton, but not AB.

  • dick commented on the blog post Texas Turns the Page   2 hours, 13 minutes ago

we will be better than an 8 seed if all 3 of those come back. i’ll be adjusting my expectations accordingly which will make season much better

Hmm, great article, more or less of the same subject I wrote on for today.
I think we are in exact agreement that Bradley should probably go if his draft grade holds steady in the 15-25 range because he’ll probably not get a better contract if he waits but simply demonstrate his ceiling as a player.

Bradley or Hamilton? In an ideal world they are both back next season. Withought knowing how well they are responding to Barnes’ style or what kind of draft grade they are looking for it’s hard to project what they will do.

Bradley has been listed as a mid-first round guy but I have trouble seeing it.

We really ought to get 4 team into the Sweet 16 though, with only Missouri having much of an excuse to not advance.

    Texoz,

As much as we need to find an identity on offense, we also need to address our defensive schemes. If JCB and JH are two big contributors and we play a 6′6″ guy at 4 and a foul prone freshman in the middle then we need to re-examine our principles on defense. We
