Post your questions for an AAU insider

Posted by Trips Right on April 4th, 2008 under Basketball, Recruiting

A friend of mine, who’s coached some big time collegiate prospects and players on the AAU circuit the last few years, has agreed to answer some questions about the secret society of AAU basketball and how it relates to the college and NBA scene. All questions are welcome but undoubtedly some questions can’t or won’t be answered.

Try to keep complaints about the Pastners to a minimum.

So fire away and I’ll do my best to get the information you seek.

  1. I’d be interested in some examples or an outline of exactly who these AAU coaches manage to attach themselves to players, and what these coaches convince stud players that they bring to the table that the recruit can’t get/do on his own.

I’d like to know more about the shoe companies. The Sonny Vaccaro stuff. How a team becomes an Adidas team or a Nike team or what.

By the way, I heard that James Gandolfini is going to play SV in an HBO movie about the ABCD camp stuff.

  3. To dovetail with Sailor’s comments, my understanding is that Texas is a “shoe neutral” university, irrespective of the brand our players wear on the court. What are the implications of that?

What are the major declared Nike, Reebok, Adidas, uh, British Knights universities?

What’s in it for the AAU coach? Notoriety? Payments? Angling for staff positions using the kids?

You read my mind re the Pastners. My question does concern them though – what is the outlook for Olsen/Pastner/UA? Are they still in the mix of things for recruiting in Houston/Texas? From the sidelines it seems as if things have shifted, or perhaps Nic Wise suggested UA focus their efforts elsewhere?

  5. How about a little more insight into William Wesley’s role in recruiting kids to Memphis?

Perhaps as soon as next year. The NCAA has an “opt out” clause in its $6 Billion contract with CBS this summer and they have already asked for a Request For Proposal from any and all networks interested.

The current contract with CBS is backloaded — the network owes the NCAA $2.3 Billion over the next

    BigDuke,

You, as usual, are correct about the ACT score. However, that he decided to continue with his commitment to USC this late in the process and this close to an anticipated NCAA ruling is probably the bigger story. He had an out and still decided on USC. Just wondering aloud

Perhaps it’s all a coincidence, but Seantrel just got his ACT score this past week. Without a test score, a recruit is ineligible to sign with any school. I’m wondering how much of this was just a smokescreen on Henderson’s part.
