Homework Assignment: Two things to watch for Stanford/Texas

Posted by Trips Right on March 28th, 2008 under Basketball

Stanford small forward personnel

It’ll likely tell you what both teams will be in defensively even before either team sets up on defense. Washington, with the twins means you’ll see Stanford in man with Washington on DJ or Mason. Hill in the game means Stanford is probably zoning, or Hill is matched up on Mason. If Hill is in and the Cardinal go M2M, Mason will undoubtedly be playing point and you’ll see our double stack look which is Abrams and DJ running off baseline screens, the twins hedging aggressively to the perimeter, and hopefully dives to the goal by screeners.

Doubling the Post

With Texas’ starting personnel, undoubtedly Atchley will be on Brook the better offensive twin. James will stay on Robin where there’s a better chance to rebound weakside. Doubling will be by Mason who’ll be on Washington. Don’t be surprised to see Washington cut to the goal on doubles. Our guards and James need to be aware. If Stanford goes to Hill with the twins, Barnes will be forced to go to Wangmene or Pittman for Mason, or go zone, because doubling becomes more problematic when Stanford has 3 perimeter shooters on the floor.

I’m off to the game.

  1. I don’t think anybody would have predicted this outcome.

  2. Trips, please explain to me why in the hell Barnes had our posts half-front Brook Lopez, giving up the block and the quick move to the glass every single time. It was maddening, and it was even moreso from the upper deck where I got a good view of our terrible angle on defense against that guy.

We never adjusted and we never doubled quickly enough. I only remember two times we quickly doubled him and forced him to pass. Predictably, he threw a terrible pass on one of those plays and turned it over.

  3. Nice analysis. Billy packer should have read it so that he would understand why Mason spent so much time at the point.

Pittman played some great D on Brook Lopez. He denied Brool position and forced him into awkward shots. Pittman’s D had a huge impact on the game (previously Brook had been in the zone), Pittman also had 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in only 10 minutes of play. Having slightly built Connor guard Brook one on one with no help was completely ineffective.

Big games by Augustin and James. Props to Barnes for putting Mason at point to give Augustin easier shooting opportunities and less stress. Monster rebounding games by Mason (8 rebounds for the undersized small forward/point guard).

Great game by the horns who shot 49% while holding Standford to 33% shooting. Holding Standord to 33% shooting is miraculous.

Memphis is probably going to beat the horns. My prediction: lots of missed free throws by both teams.

the heartless , soft , weak minded longhorns stand little to no chance against the monstrosity that is the memphis tigers. DJ will get exposed as the overrated tiny wee-man guard that he is, James will be intidimidated much like he was tonight , Abrams will fail to show up on offense yet again , and Rick Barnes will do his yearly ritual of getting outcoached in a big tournament game. With the game being played in houston there will be a ton of value in the line for the tigers. for the sake of your wallet bet the tigers. …… if the longhorns manage a bologna win and you lose a few bucks , atleast you can go to the final four and drink your burnt orange koolaid there.

    Paging Funk & Wagnalls.

  6. Huck, one of my keys was never allow the post passer to lead the player into his move. And you’re right, we saw that half a dozen times. I think our kids tried to get out of the half front when the ball was moved to the wing, but physically all but Dex was incapable. Knowing that, we should have denied the ball getting to the wing more aggressively, or doubled quicker as you pointed out. We did a decent job of doubling quicker in the second half.

Kafka, thanks for your insight as always. Memphis is going to be a handful.

comeonminers, Jeep Jackson is dead to me. See you in El Paso, bro.

    texas longhorns 0

    rest of texas 0

jeep jaxkson was a great player. tim hardaway , antonio davis , dave “big cheese” feitl , soup campbell , marlon maxey , and many more. And lets not even start comparing our coaches to the longhorns … that might be too painful for you to take.

Wow, louisville as a 9 will give Duke all they want in the second round.

The TAMU vs. UTAH state battle of the aggies might be played in the 40’s.

Siena will beat Purdue. Bank it. They probably win their next game.

Nova as a one seed an overseed.

Don’t listen to Seth Davis, Texas is a shell and Wisconsin is over seeded as a four. Kentucky will run them out of he gym. Kentucky walks to elite 8 where WVU will have something for them.

In the West, Syracuse has a walk to the sweet sixteen, but Butler can give them problems.

Syracuse gets KSU as their two so it looks like either Kentucky or Duke is stuck with WVU. Tough break. Pitt as a three is a joke. If I’m Self I’m really pissed now. KU

Carlos Dunlap is going to be an incredible pro. If he goes to the Ravens that is going to suck for their opponents.

Midwest 1 goes to Kansas, no surprise they deserve it. They’ll face Lehigh who happens to have a pretty athletic frontcourt for a 16.

Kansas got a tough breaking drawing Maryland on the four line. There was talk the terps could be a 3.

For my money the race for Player of the Year isn’t all that close. Sorry John Wall. My apologies Wes Johnson. Evan Turner is the most dynamic and talented player in the college game today. He’s built like a hybrid wing, handles like point guard, and shoots it like a sniper.

    Ripley,

Agreed 100%. I meant only to observe that Metoyer wasn’t a guy like Stills (once recorded running a 4.36) who just really impresses you with his speed, too. That’s one of the reasons I think Stills ends up being the 4th WR in the rotation by conference play.

Neon, you might be right about Kentucky, but I’m still worried about their athleticism and I’m not sure K-State has anyone to match up with Cousins inside. Plus, it’s KSU’s offense that has been struggling lately, so I would be afraid of getting into a high-scoring game, even if Kentucky isn’t great defensively. As for

Well I won’t disagree that Syracuse plays a better zone than Baylor but I think the strengths of the Texas offense still give them some good answers for a zone. Syracuse invites teams to get the ball inside where James and Johnson are comfortable even if they are contesting it much better from there than
