Today it gets serious

Posted by CrazyJoeDavola on March 12th, 2008 under Basketball

We’ve had a trickle of college hoops coverage over the past week or so as the cannon fodder conferences have been playing and concluding their tournaments. But today we have:

  • Day One of the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, SEC and Southland conference tournaments. If you’re in the Katy area, you can catch the latter. Stephen F. Austin is the #1 seed. I look forward to the “Lumberjacks off to hot start in tourney action” headlines.
  • Quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10, Big East, Conference USA, Mid-America, Mountain West, PAC-10 and WAC tournaments
  • Continuing action in Big West, Mid-Eastern Athletic and SWAC tournaments. By the way, the latter conference’s #1 seed is Alabama State. They’re led by 7′1″ center Chief Kickingstallionsims. I believe he’s Scotch-Irish.

It’s going to be awesome, especially for those of us who don’t have jobs but somehow can still afford cable.

In some ways, I actually prefer this week’s action over the first round of the NCAAs. There’s still so much hope in the air, you’d think you were at an Obama caucus.

In the big conferences, you get mid-table teams that are scratching and clawing to secure those last few slots tourney slots. These are the Villanovas and Ohio States and Texas A&Ms of the world – they simply can’t afford any missteps at this point. This can lead to some heart-stopping contests and people like Gerry MacNamara going apeshit for four straight days. It can also lead to dreary, tight brickfests in front of soporific crowds. This is what the Aggies are hoping for against Iowa State, of course.

Your Doppler! Action! Forecast! for Kansas City for the late evening of March 13, 2008

There are usually big crowds at these big conference tourneys, and a lot of energy as the teams and their fan bases prep and primp for the Dance. But outside of a rare miracle run, and those bubble teams, the big conferences already have their representatives slotted. There’s not a whole lot of mystery or stakes involved, outside of bragging rights and the chance to extend exhausting arguments of who really serves as conference champion, the tourney winner or the regular season winner.

It’s the championship games of the little conferences – the MAACs, the SWACs, the Patriot Leagues – that I love to watch. The games are usually played in school gyms instead of swanky arenas, places so small that every row of stands will fit in a single camera angle. The announcer areas are fold-out cafeteria tables, tastefully limned with something approximating velvet. The cheerleaders are often taller and beefier than the point guards. The teams are made up of shitloads of seniors expecting to do something called “graduate” with “engineering” degrees or some other arcane bullshit. This is where you see Lithuanian ents trying to guard waterbug guards who may be small, but they sure are slow and shoot poorly.

And the games are often entertaining as hell, with mucho chaos reigning – desperate three-point heaves hitting nothing but backboard; passes going to different area codes from their targets; prematurely balding white guys somersaulting over floppy-haired white guys, trying desperately to grab a crucial rebound with only 14:32 left to go in the first half. The broadcasts are shakier, the sound higher-pitched than in games televised with actual production values; they are also blissfully lacking in Dick Vitale and Billy Packer. You just get the feeling these folks are doing this because they want to, not because they have to.

And at the end, a whole bunch of people jump around in ecstasy for the chance to be ritually devoured by Memphis a week or so from now.

That is, of course, unless they decide to go all Richmond or Santa Clara or Coppin State or Hampton on some bitches.

This is what you get for disrespecting the MEAC

  1. So Baylor lost to Colorado.

A&M needs to beat Iowa State tonight to solidify their bid. It’s possible that this terrible loss and the poor finish puts A&M in over Baylor if the league only gets 5 bids.

Baylor played an enormously stupid game. No energy for the first 65-75% of the game. Jerrells was completely out of control. Guys just jacking panicky 3s up willy nilly, and very little team play in the OTs. Colorado tried to give the game away at the free-throw line, but Baylor apparently wasn’t interested.

It could be a gigantic loss for them.

  3. Baylor had a lot of company today in terms of teams that are in desperate need of the Heimlich.

Villanova, Arizona State, Maryland, Oregon, Syracuse all spit the bit.

    “all spit the bit”

So did the Aggies, though in a different way.

What happens when a stoppable force meets a movable object?

We’ll find out on March 18th. Meet Wake Forest.

This game will be watching drunks trying to brawl. Neither belligerent will land a punch, and it will be viewed by both fanbases with equal measures of horror, embarassment, and amusement.

Some one sent this quote from the Dallas Mornong News to me.

He really screwed himself. We probably would have won two more games with him. He was more worried about the “devil’s lettuce” than developing into a solid back. Pathetic.

dick, thanks for the heads up on the east bracket. In my haste to get the post up I had a brain cramp on the bracket.

As for KU, when you compare their bracket to Syracuse you have to scratch your head. Even Self mentioned as much.

Scooby, you’re probably right about the 8/9.

I have been thinking that the team quit on Barnes some time during the last 14-15 games.
My brother in Michigan thought the the team fell apart after the 11-12th game of the season I think that it was atm @CC game.
I wonder if Barnes has health issues, he just looks bad on TV and

Marquette line really surprises me. I like Washington and normally I would be impressed with a conference tourney winner but that falls under the Pac 10 sucks rule to me. I would have liked to see Washington lined up against a different 6 seed.

Call me crazy but I would prefer to face OSU over any of the other three 2 seeds. They basically lost to Michigan (who truly sucks) on Friday, played Illinois even yesterday and beat an exhausted Minnesota team today. They aren’t exactly on fire. As for the other #2’s, I have no interest in playing

Utah State can really shoot it. They’re the top 3 point shooting team in America. But they struggle against quicker athletes and can be banged inside. the big 12 isn’t getting a lot of credit so the line is short, imo

I posted my picks, but as you stated Richmond looks like easy money.

I think Purdue is a shell and Siena is experienced, athletic and talented. Saints roll.

I’m fading Gonzaga and St Mary’s. Zero athletes on those clubs.

I”m also fading Michigan State with NMSU. They’ll be able to get shots against

I like UTEP and Wake to add to Trips bets, which I support fully.

    Siena = 3 units

First, Duke is playing Nova in the Elite 8, not WVU. I still don’t like Duke to cut down the nets in Houston (they do that for reaching FF right?)

Second, I keep hearing the pundits say the same thing about the Midwest but I don’t see it. UNLV isn’t better than any of

Well… it’s not going to be easy.

First off, let me get this straight. As the committee says, they seed based on an S-Curve. So by that logic, this is how they see the top 16…

    1. Kansas
    2. Kentucky
    3. Duke
    4. Syracuse
    5. Kansas State
    6. Villanova
    7. West Virginia
    8. Ohio State
    9. Georgetown
    10. New Mexico
    11. Baylor
    12. Pittsburgh
    13. Vanderbilt
    14.

No problem. I do futures all the time so I have obsessed over that decision many times. Letting $100 25-1 odds ride as long as you can is much more intense.

We need to get some more betting previews going here for the tourney. We can link to marchtomarch.com or whatever.

No problem. I do futures all the time so I have obsessed over that decision many times. 2 to 1 is just a bet and it wasn’t like you were invested in that bet for a long time. Letting season long $100 25-1 odds ride as long as you can is much

You guys got absloutely screwed. Toughest bracket by far. Even Lehigh is the toughest 16 seed. The committee did you zero favors.

Mike Iupati will get taken by the Cowboys if he’s on the board. I wouldn’t hate a Golden Tate pick, but we have much bigger needs along the OL and secondary rather than getting another WR. We already have a ton of money tied up in the position (when we pay Austin).

We earned a 7 seed and will face Georgia Tech in Milwaukee on Thursday. If we survive that we face Ohio State in the second round. Shoot well and we can make the sweet 16. I’m relieved that Lunardi missed on his 8 seed projection for us. I’m much less worried about Ohio State than
