Russell Shepard’s coach hates America

Posted by HenryJames on March 6th, 2008 under Football, Recruiting

“Russell can throw the football. He’s been growing in our offense and has the ability to take (advantage of) the best plays available. Sometimes the best play available is a running play. We like to run the ball. But I think he’s definitely a quarterback. He’s exactly what you want as a quarterback and a field general.

“The University of Texas had not won a conference championship until they got an athlete who could run and pass and spread the field for them, and that was Vince Young. Russell is very comparable to Vince. That’s who he’s compared to in the city of Houston, Vince Young.”

– Cypress Ridge coach Gary Thiebaud.

This liar’s words can’t be true. According to the oracle of the month at Orangebloods.com, Mack Brown is in “MNC mode” and that’s why he kicked Shepard to the curb. Everyone knows that Mack will win a national championship only if he turns away the best dual-threat quarterback in the country and focuses on recruiting good kids who graduate and a few who kick bitches that need a good, stern kicking.

I look forward to revisiting this site in 3-4 years to compare Shepard and Gilbert. I have a feeling UT fans will not be happy.

  7. sorry, but shepard has a long way to go to start comparing to vince

By then, BC will have lost the domain and hosting due to a lack of financing. Asian hookers and black tar heroine prices are on the rise. Recession hits everybody hard.

  9. They forgot to ask Coach Cajun Sirname how they operate a West Coast offense and only throw 10 passes per game.

Somebody named Bill Little offered us $300,000 for the domain.

  11. GG=Colt McCoy. RS=VY, lets take GG.

  12. I think Gilbert is twice the prospect that McCoy is. Think Chris Simms without the howitzer, but with better decision making abilities. RS may wind up being similar to Vince, but at this point, all I can see is a fantastic athlete. I hate missing out on him, but I can see how Mack and GD would rather take the developed QB over the project. Would have been great to get both, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Gilbert had more touchdown passes last year than Shepard had completions.

That sounds like something that would have to be made up, but it’s not.

    Gilbert-52 Touchdown passes.
    Shepard-49 Complete passes.

Shepard is a quarterback in that he lines up behind the center and takes a snap. If he can throw the ball, he has yet to show even a glimmer of ability to do so. He is a wide receiver in most high school offenses. There is no doubt that he is a great athlete, but if anyone thinks he is anything close to Vince Young, they are crazy.

  15. I concur with Nacy Horn. John Chiles was a much more accomplished passer than Shepard out of college. Shepard is an athlete, but not a dual-threat quarterback. He’s an option QB.

  16. Option QBs are dominating the landscape right now. Dennis Dixon sucked until they put him in a run first, option offense. How well does Pat White pass? Not well, yet WVU was one injured thumb from the MNC game.

Shepard may not be a better passer but he’s a safer pick. Running ability doesn’t bust.

But anyway, like I said this isn’t about one or the other. We should have both. When a 5 star guy who loves us doesn’t end up here, something is wrong.

Remind me how Dixon’s season ended. How did the Ducks do after he got hurt? Care to try again?

Option, schmoption. Greg Davis and Mack Brown are in MNC Mode, bee-yotches! Now that they’ve finally recruited a highly-ranked passing quarterback, Texas will be unstoppable. UNSTOPPABLE! Except in October in Dallas. And, assuming Oklahoma loses two conference games, the Big 12 Championship game. And possibly in College Station.

  19. “Remind me how Dixon’s season ended. How did the Ducks do after he got hurt? Care to try again?”

Um. What? I’m not even going to try to decipher what point you think you are making.

However, since I brought Oregon up, they are a great example. Dennis Dixon spends 3 years being terrible, then has a brilliant senior season in a run first shotgun option offense. Then he gets hurt, two guys who can’t run come in, and the season goes down the tubes. That’s how powerful the shotgun run game is these days. Until someone figures out how to stop it, teams with QB who can run don’t need to be able to do anything but the basics through the air.

Shepard ain’t Vince, of course. Vince Young was a great passing QB in high school, it just so happened he was a man among boys when he ran, too. Shepard won’t be able to average 50 points a game like we did with Vince.

But look at our history with drop back passers, and look at our history with runners. Which do you feel better about?

That’s quite a stretch to view the away goals rule as a harkening to the territorial origins of the game. The game is now split between matches taking place entirely in one town or the other.

The rule is a bad one, IMO. You don’t even have to take it to its logical extreme
