Junior Day Part Deux

Posted by Scipio Tex on February 21st, 2008 under Recruiting

This junior day will be interesting on three levels:

1. In its immediate wake, we’ll have effectively filled at least half of our 2008 class. We’ll have 10-12 commitments by March 1st.

2. We’ll learn how inoculated we are against camp fever. Steady, Mack. Steady.

3. We’ll see the degree of influence from Muschamp in how we recruit DL and LB.

Here’s a list of the guys coming in:

TE – Trey Graham – Waco Midway
TE – Jordan Najvar – Klein Oak

We take a TE this year. It could be one of these two. Both are basketball players. Graham has more stats to date; Najvar is a former QB with a Joe Jon Finley frame – he is a legit 6-6 and he’ll fill out quickly.

RB – Jonathan Miler – Garland Naaman Forest
RB – Rex Burkhead – Plano
RB – Ryan Swope – Austin Westlake

Miller is nice. Check out his film on Rivals. He’s easily a Top 100 prospect. Swope is yet another Westlake RB with great hands, straight line speed and…lots of untouched runs through gaping holes. Burkhead is a stronger, edgier Swope. We probably offer neitherone of them. Deal with it.

OL – Mason Walters – Frenship
OL – Fitiseula Partsch – Baytown Sterling

We want Walters’ fren’ship. That would close out our OL class in style.

Ath – Jeremy Moore – Austin LBJ

I don’t see it.

DT – Calvin Howell – San Antonio Warren
DE – Radermon Scypion – Port Arthur Memorial
DE – Dominique Jones – Kilgore
DE – Michael Brockers – Houston Chavez
DL – Kirby Ennis – Huntsville

Howell has offers from OU & A&M. I think we’ll offer unless he makes fun of Sally’s capri pants. Brockers is from Houston Chavez. Holale vato! He has very solid film. He also just committed to LSU. I want Scypion Radermon for his name alone. He brings to mind a Rastafarian scorpion. No film to be seen on Jones or Ennis, but Ennis is a good basketball player on a good Huntsville team and that speaks to his athleticism.

DB – Daniel Cobb – Killeen Ellison
DB – Roderick Goodlow – Dallas Adamson
DB – Kevin Brent – Dallas South Oak Cliff

Cobb and Goodlow want badly to be Longhorns. Brent is a stud with offers from Miami, LSU, OU, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Judging by his picture, Brent is 35 years old. I’m thoroughly convinced he’s Ron McKelvey.

LB – Brandon Mahoney – Keller Fossil Ridge
LB – Tariq Allen – Irving MacArthur
LB – Kerry Hyder – Austin LBJ
LB – Chris McAllister – Converse Judson
LB – Austin Moss – South Garland
LB – Patrick Nkwopara – South Grand Prairie

I loved Mahoney in Police Academy. Undersized quickness guy with an OU offer. Tariq Allen is a man-child ILB with offers from A&M & OU. Hyder has rather underwhelming film – I don’t see a way he leaves with an offer. Judson’s McAllister is highly rated – I’d like to see the celluloid. Moss has lots of production and lots of film. Watching that film explains his production: instincts, motor, and a scheme dedicated to keeping blockers out of his zip code. Moss is reportedly an OU lean. Nkwopara is an undersized 5-10 200 speed backer (4.5ish 40) who loves Texas. SMU and Tech are hoping that we don’t reciprocate his amour.

We’ll update as events warrant.

  1. Mason Walters’ film:

    Austin Moss:

  2. So what’s your take on Nkwopara? Am I too scarred by Bobino and the inability of our staff to do anything with Kelson to appreciate this kid? Or is he a reach?

What’s the story with the LB from West Texas? Thought he was going to make it in.

I think Brockers is a heavy LSU lean. LSU. Starting to sound familiar? If we don’t recover our fumble this might be their year to make serious inroads back in to Texas.

  3. McLovin:

Nkwopara is much faster than Bobino. He is a reach in the sense that he has no clear college position. However, if you’re going to reach, might as well do it with fast kid.

Chris Williams won’t make it in, but we finally decided to start recruiting him in earnest. I really like Chris Williams and think he’s underrated right now. But then I have a bias for angry linebackers who dominate games and injure people. Grades might be an issue.

I’ve heard that about Brockers as well, but the fact that he’s tripping in pleases me. LSU is a bigger problem for A&M than for us, but yeah, those crooked fuckers have great appeal to any high school kid within 500 miles of their campus. Maybe a Perriloux explosion helps our cause.

  4. Judson High School… Representin’!

  5. I heart Jim Rackley. He’s what Texas high school football is all about.

  6. I love that Rackley clip.

Mason Walters is an animal at the point of attack and he runs extremely well. 6-6 playing center? Shades of Rex Tucker.

He could be an All-Big 12 guy at any of the OL positions. Not many guys you can say that about.

So we’d be giddy with committments from Walters and Brent this Sunday. Anyone else would just be some 3 star maybe low 4 star. Is Vaccarro coming back to campus or is his rumor of committing just supposed to happen this weekend from his home?

  8. Unbiased:

We’d be giddy to get commitments from Brent and Walters, however it’s way too early to think we know all of the best prospects. There’s a lot of fluidity in the rankings as film gets out and more guys get known. That’s the value of having some restraint. There are several kids up there that we could get on late and still get their commitment. Why get a handjob from a fat girl now when Minka Kelly said she may be coming over at midnight?

Miller is a solid guy at RB and several of the DL and LBs are absolute takes.

Vaccaro may be tripping to TCU, if I recall correctly. I’d like his commitment. I think he has a nice upside.

  9. Emily Jones if freakin hot. Get out the way, crusty coach, I need to see me some more EJ.

  10. If I had played for Jim Rackley I would have been afraid to suck as much as I did. Wow.

  11. “I have a bias for angry linebackers who dominate games and injure people. ”

Ha ha. It’s a strange dichotomy – Mack, the charmer, and Mack the dude that surely realizes the national champ each year is usually the team with the most badass gangsta dudes who can fuck you up.

Brockers committed to LSU today. Scratch him off the list.

  15. “Moss has lots of production and lots of film. Watching that film explains his production: instincts, motor, and a scheme dedicated to keeping blockers out of his zip code.”

    Read: Curtis Lofton, II.

  16. That’s a very good comparison, though it does not obey the internet fan rule that white players must always be compared to other white players, irrespective of their actual similarity.

  17. You better not be talking about me, cracker. I am the king of comparing white kids to black kids.

  18. You’re a true progressive.

  19. You’re like a skinny Al Roker.

  20. HenryJames is like RuPaul with eyebrows.

  21. Dominique Jones and Patrick Nkwopara have committed.

  22. Kyle Kriegel now as well.

    Kyle who? Exactly.

    Caaaammmmppppppp Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeevvuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhh! Catch it!

I want to see Mack Brown on Deal or No Deal. I suspect that he would quit after the second briefcase for about $800.

  25. that made me laugh, matt. I think you’ll enjoy my camp fever post on the main board.

  26. HenryJames, thanks for the Rackley clip!

That said, I’m not sure this team would beat those other two. They would lose Abrams and let him go 7-15 on 3s and the Abrams team played better

10 weeks ago, Oregon played in the Rose Bowl as Pac 10 champions. Since their loss to Ohio State, the program has been in some kind of bizzaro parallel universe where every headline concerns a player arrest, a firing, or now a resignation.

    Prescient comment, Doc.

I think we learned today that no team is really a mirror image of Missouri, even if Clemson is about as close as it gets. Unless you have significantly better/more talented athletes, if you try to run with the Tigers, you will lose. This team is so much fun to watch in games

Doc, the turnovers seemed to do the trick – there were great big chunks of time when Mizzou didn’t even have to get into a half court offense.

Great to see Ramsey have such a good game and pretty stifle Booker. As Euclid said during the game, even when Mizzou doesn’t play well

“Also because those other teams gave great effort almost every game. This team’s effort was questionable. Dumb and lazy, not a good combo…..”

This is what made this season so bizarre for me. This has never been a problem for Barnes’ teams. But I actually questioned this team’s heart and desire to play together

Travis Ford spent the 2nd half channeling his inner Rick Barnes — lot’s of standing around on offense while one player tries to generate something off a ball screen — then taking a forced shot.

So the Big 12 goes 5-2 in Round One.

  • skymonkeyhorn commented on the blog post Barnes worst team   10 hours, 2 minutes ago

This is the worst coached team ever in Barnes era. Period.
Worst defense over the whole season,
Offense sucked big time and the bench coaching was horrible, ransom’s attitude was better then the coach’s overall this season.

advertisers think they will probably get some deals for the additional 32 games that would be added. The feeling is that an ESPN would disount rates somewhat, since they already have a dual revenue stream — advertising dollars and subscription fees.

So far on Day Two, no buzzer beaters, but there was the obligatory #12 over #5 with Cornell thumping Temple 78-65, but the Ivy League school was everyone’s “inside” pick for an upset. Still the day hasn’t come close to generating the action that Thursday had.

I wasn’t trying to say they quit. They just didn’t play hard a lot of the time. Lazy = lack of effort. Example, our transition defense was about 75% effort and 25% stupidity. We loafed down court a lot. The kids didn’t like to lose so they would fight back,

  • Patrick Bateman commented on the blog post Barnes worst team   12 hours, 55 minutes ago

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.

The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.
