Looking ahead to the 2008 Football Season?

Posted by CallKevin on January 23rd, 2008 under Football

Here’s a look at the Horns lineup.

Just my projections–happy to have any suggestions/corrections. I assume Muschamp will dramatically shake things up, but I’m basing this on last year’s depth-chart, the assumption that no one else commits, our verbals all sign LOI’s, older folks don’t get beat out, everyone heals up beautifully, no one changes positions, and that all freshmen red-shirt. None of those assumptions are wise, but I’m aiming for the non-controversial viewpoint for a change.

I show us at 83 on scholarship right now, with Justin Moore (punter) and Luke Tiemann (FB) as the most likely to recieve scholarships this Fall if we’ve got a few open.

On defense, we have 34 scholarship players:

DB’s:

Starting Cornerbacks: JR Deon Beasley & SR-RS Ryan Palmer
Backup Cornerbacks: SO-RS Chykie Brown and SO Curtis Brown
Depth at CB: FR-RS Earl Thomas

Starting Safeties: JR-RS Ishie Oduegwu (off-season surgery on left shoulder) and FR-RS Ben Wells
Depth at Safety: FR-RS Christian Scott

Incoming Freshmen, with my guess as to position: Spring Entry Blake Gideon (S), DJ Monroe (CB), Aaron Williams (S), Nolan Brewster (S)

LB’s:

Starting LB’s: JR Jared Norton, JR Sergio Kindle (offseason surgery on right knee), JR-RS Roddrick Muckelroy
Backup LB’s: SR-RS Rashad Bobino, SO-RS Dustin Earnest, FR-RS Keenan Robinson

Incoming Freshmen: Emmanuel Acho, Spring Entry Dravannti Johnson

DL:

Starting DT’s: SR Roy Miller and JR Ben Alexander
Backup DT’s: SO-RS Brian Ellis and FR-RS Michael Wilcoxon
Depth at DT: FR-RS Tyrell Higgins

Incoming Freshmen: Jarvis Humphrey, Kheeston Randall

Starting DE’s: SR-RS Brian Orakpo and JR Lamarr Houston
Backup DE’s: SO-RS Eddie Jones (offseason surgery on left shoulder) and SR Aaron Lewis (offseason surgery on broken left clavicle)
Depth at DE: SO Sam Acho, SR Henry Melton, FR-RS Russell Carter
——————————

On offense, we have 45 scholarship players:

QB’s:

JR-RS Colt McCoy
SO John Chiles
SO-RS Sherrod Harris
FR-RS GJ Kinne

RB’s:

Tailbacks: SO-RS Vondrell McGee, SR-RS Chris Ogbonnaya, FR-RS Foswhitt Whittaker
Fullbacks: SR-RS Luke Tiemann (no scholarship), SO-RS Antwan Cobb, SR-RS Nic Redwine
Uncertain: FR-RS Cody Johnson

Freshmen: Spring Entry Jeremy Hills, Spring Entry Tre Newton, and Ryan Roberson

WR’s:

Starters: SR-RS Jordan Shipley and SR Quan Cosby
Backups: SO Brandon Collins and SO-RS Montre Webber
Depth: SO James Kirkendoll, SO-RS Philip Payne, FR-RS Malcolm Williams

Freshmen: Spring Entry Dan Buckner, Spring Entry Brock Fitzhenry, DJ Grant, DeSean Hales, and Antoine Hicks

TE’s:

Starter and Backup: SO Blaine Irby, SR-RS Peter Ullman
Depth: SO-RS Josh Marshall, FR-RS Ian Harris, FR-RS Ahmard Howard

OL:

Starters, left to right: JR-RS Adam Ulatoski (offseason surgery on left knee), JR-RS Charlie Tanner, JR-RS Chris Hall, SR-RS Cedric Dockery, SO Kyle Hix
Backups, left to right: SO Tray Allen, SO-RS Britt Mitchell, SO-RS Buck Burnette, SO Michael Huey, FR-RS Aundre McGaskey
Depth: SO-RS Greg Smith (center), SO-RS Steve Moore (guard)

Freshmen: Spring Entry David Snow, Spring Entry Mark Buchanan, Luke Poehlmann

——————————
On special teams, we have 4 scholarship players:

Kicker: JR-RS Ryan Bailey, JR Hunter Lawrence

Punter: JR-RS Justin Moore (no scholarship), JR-RS Trevor Gerland

Freshman: Spring Entry Justin Tucker (Kicker)

  1. Interesting stuff, my thoughts are zzzzzzz…

  2. Our linebackers will be stronger than our defensive tackles. When was the last time we were able to say that about a Texas team?

  3. 1995, bitches

  4. “Thoughts?”

Greg Davis is still the OC. 10-3, lose to OU, second-tier bowl. It’s who we are.

  5. Achilles heel: Safeties. If the front 7 can’t stop the run and our dewy-eyed safeties have to help, look for another season ranked in the triple-digits for pass defense, Muschamp or no Muschamp.

  6. You guys are going to think I’m crazy… but I see 10 wins, a second place finish in the South, and a trip to either the Cotton or Holiday Bowls.

Questionable secondary, questionable DTs. Muschamp is probably wondering why he left Auburn after watching the tape. He will earn his keep if we are top 50 in defense next year against the schedule we face.

On offense, decent QB with what should be a decent line, decent RB, and unproven but very talented depth at WR should be somewhat interesting. To be better than good, we have got to use Chiles more in my opionion.

I think 10-3, second in the south and holi-cotton is being very optimistic.

  8. will bobino really be a backup? he is a senior afterall and i thought that was the only thing that really mattered when playing LB or center…

  9. Bobino was a backup in the Holiday Bowl. I’m just following my “nobody gets passed” rule.

  10. “You guys are going to think I’m crazy… but I see 10 wins, a second place finish in the South, and a trip to either the Cotton or Holiday Bowls.”

    when has that ever happened

  11. Let’s see what tune y’all sing when The Major lands Darrell Scott.

  12. false advertising…

  13. Orangebloods…I missed the news. Major is in Austin as QB coach? Good for you, but did Saban dump him?

  14. No.

  15. Left OC at Bama to be QB coach at UT. Well, if you didn’t know already, you know who you’re next head coach is now.

  16. your, not you’re, duh

  17. WE LANDED ON THE MOON!!! YES.

  18. Actually it is running backs coach.

  19. I really WANT to believe that Mack has learned some valuable lessons but I just can’t shake my doubts about his pansy-ass bad habits. I just have a bad feeling that Bobino will somehow be a starting LB again (puke).

Sorry for the hiatus. It started with disgust as I watched us mail in the conference finale in Boulder.  I didn’t have anything to say about that game.  Then work got in the way and I missed the redemption game in the first round of the conference tournament.  The Kansas game, too.  I’m a rotten fan.

Perhaps as soon as next year. The NCAA has an “opt out” clause in its $6 Billion contract with CBS this summer and they have already asked for a Request For Proposal from any and all networks interested.

The current contract with CBS is backloaded — the network owes the NCAA $2.3 Billion over the next

    Big Booty Ho’s!

    BigDuke,

You, as usual, are correct about the ACT score. However, that he decided to continue with his commitment to USC this late in the process and this close to an anticipated NCAA ruling is probably the bigger story. He had an out and still decided on USC. Just wondering aloud

Perhaps it’s all a coincidence, but Seantrel just got his ACT score this past week. Without a test score, a recruit is ineligible to sign with any school. I’m wondering how much of this was just a smokescreen on Henderson’s part.

I think you’re right on point number 2. They were

I don’t buy that we HAVE to win this conference or the conference tourney unless KU is in an awful down year. That would be like someone other than OU or Texas saying that their football season was a failure because they didn’t win the Big 12 title. The owners of the Big
