Coker a candidate for Southern Methodissed job

Posted by HenryJames on December 18th, 2007 under Football

Former Miami coach Larry Coker has interviewed for the vacant SMU job.

How the mighty have fallen. Dude won a national championship six years ago.

The Dallas Morning News article says Coker has “a reputation as a players’ coach.” That’s pretty much how every former Miami coach is described. Former Miami players usually are referred to by more colorful monikers.

Meanwhile, SMU’s coaching search is in its eighth week. Seriously? They’ve already interviewed Navy coach Paul Johnson who smartly turned them down for Georgia Tech. Now they’re looking at Coker.

  1. what happened to greg davis? or was that another rumor balloon sent out by macks staff?

  2. This was easy to see coming. Coker heavily recruited the Highland Park area while at Miami.

For those of you not familiar with the area, it consists mostly of housing projects and is rife with gang activity. But the athletes that come out of that bleak situation there are generally top notch.

  3. I rode in a rumor balloon once. It was fun until I got sick on all that cotton candy. Long story short, Greg Davis saved my life that day.

Yes, the Highland Park Scotts football team is so poor, the offensive players have to swap equipment with the defensive players during special teams downs. Helmets and shoulder pads are fairly easy to share during a game, but there was in incident on the sideline this year when the offensive line had to swap jock straps with the defensive line during a punt. Suffice it to say it wasn’t pretty.

  5. i used to have to switch jockstraps with elephants..

Has anyone seen that Mack has decided that it is time to institute some motivational tools into his practice sessions. According to hookem.com Mack believes that it is high time that the boys should face some team pressure if they screw up. According to the article, Mack has decided that every time a player screws up or commits a “NOS” (not our standard) then the entire team has to do “up-downs” (an unpleasant cardio drill).

Where do I begin? I am just glad that Mack has decided at this opportune time in the season, before the Horns go play for all the marbles in the fabled Holiday Bowl, that there should be some consequences for screwing-up. He could have instituted similar measures after the “Soulja Boy” UCF game where he, instead, decided to just look real mean at the guys. He upped the steaks for screw-ups after the Kansas State game when he instituted the “NMF” a.k.a. “not my fault” standard, shortly after which Jamaal Charles flaunted his un-bench-ability despite his sloppy ball handling.

The latest news from deep in the Brown hole (pun intended) torture chamber for screw-ups… Akina and Davis have each been given a 1/4″ long piece of chalk and have been required to write 1000 times each: “Mack is my daddy, Mack is my daddy, Mack is my daddy…”

Finally, I am confused as to the definition of “not our standard” when applied to the defense. As the 109th defense in the nation, and considering that there are 119 teams in Division I, does that mean that a “not our standard” is something that those other 10 defenses would do? I mean does Akina stand out there with a whistle just waiting for something that doesn’t live up to the Texas standard of defense so he can blow that thing and scream, “HEY BOBINO! THAT TACKLE SUCKED! I EXPECT YOU TO START PLAYING LIKE YOU’RE ON A TEAM IN THE TOP 91.5%. THAT PLAY WAS SO BOTTOM 5%. NOW GET DOWN AND GIVE ME SOME UP-DOWNS UNTIL YOU PUKE… OR UNTIL I COUNT TO 3, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST!”

This just in with regard to Mack’s new practice sessions:

“We’ve been more physical,” tailback Jamaal Charles said. “Everybody’s played well. As coach Brown said, if we practiced like that every day during the season, nobody could beat us.”

Well DUH! And there are some who try to defend Mack and his crack coaching staff. Maybe Mack will get another bonus and extension for such innovative coaching techniques.

  8. They’re also talking to Franchione.

  9. We fire him and he moves 5 minutes down the road from me.

I just can’t get away from that motherfucker…

  10. If Frannycakes gets hired at SMU, he might be able to charge more for his newsletter – you know, wealthier alums and all.

I didn’t watch all the games you guys played all year but yesterday’s game seemed to me to hinge on the ineffectiveness of Sherron. really sad for that guy as he’s a baller. I think Ojanb Bob said this over at BC too. He just couldn’t get it done on either

I agree the RG position will be the most interesting development of the Spring. Last year Okafor couldn’t drive block and couldn’t run in the open field on screen plays. If he’s not physically capable of losing weight and improving, I want to know who will replace him. Suh and McCoy may

An already painful week turned excruciating for Carlo Ancelotti. Manchester United edged Liverpool and now control the Premier League race.

With Leach at the wheel I was expecting a 10 win minimum season with the guys this team has coming back in 2010. Now with Tubbs, Willis, and Brown running the show I’m in agreement it’s anywhere between 9-12 wins this year.

Very exciting to hear your take on the O-line ded, as

    No Kalin Lucas?

    No problem.

“Too Easy” has had his share of leg and ankle problems this season, and with two minutes left in the Spartans’ second round matchup with Greivis Vasquez and the Maryland Terrapins, he made an early exit.
