Defending the Aggie Option Attack

Posted by TexasFootball on November 20th, 2007 under Football

height=Coach Akina is now faced with stopping the Aggie option and it should be interesting to see how he defends it. Most DC’s completely scrap their foundation schemes and revert to teaching assignment techniques with a revamping of alignments in order to give their group an even opportunity for success against an attack that has almost died in most football minds. Motion and deception make playing standard spread schemes risky against the option and allow angle blocking advantages to defenders reading and reacting instead of free-flowing to their assignment immediately after the snap. UT hasn’t played assignment football against the Aggie option in several years and it’s probably less than 50/50 that Akina will push to teach a new assignment scheme even though he has proven his teaching skills with our zone pass coverages.

Most DC’s want to start an option defense with a solid foundation against the home-run part of the option, which is the keep-pitch for most option offenses. Most will simply align a defender in both alleys and not depend on pursuit to fill the alley. Most will turn the alley defender’s stance to face straight on at the QB which makes any block on him come from the inside. These two alley aligned defenders have QB on the option and always read the TE’s block/release to get quick key knowing it’s either QB on run or TE short/flat on pass.

height=Most DC’s will have playside CB/safety games as primary contain with the other having WR coverage. Most DC’s would also coach the flowside LB to run directly from dive to pitch knowing the QB has been assigned. Most DC’s would probably play extra heavy on dive to Lane’s alignment in a three back set with a three technique regardless of formation strength and the DE either closing or crashing with a definite dive “assignment”. Most DC’s would eliminate any thoughts of the mug “give-up” this week because you lose numbers in pursuit without any chance of evading the O-Lineman.

Most DC’s would try to make McGee beat them throwing the ball. The one receiver that must receive maximum coverage is Bennett. If we watch last year’s film, it should be very clear that Akina should not align our SLB on Bennett. It was bad enough to lose the LOS in that battle but disappearing off the screen shouldn’t be overlooked when making that decision.

If Akina decides to use our regular spread schemes against the Aggies option maybe he will have plans C and D ready in case we under-estimated our ability to cover all three options with “busy” pursuit. We beat Tech with our two OLB’s in coverage and containing but it’s a bit of a lottery whether they can do the same against the Aggies option.

  1. Can we bring Carl Reese back for this one game?

If there’s ever an offense in which LBs overrunning plays, taking bad angles, and failing to fight off blocks kills you, its against a team that can run the option effectively.

  3. Bennett has killed us the last two years blocking, and last year’s LB alignment did us no favors. We should be fine against the dive with our two tackles provided they actually try to find the ball carrier when they penetrate. Anything outside of the tackle box should be a concern.

  4. Where is Ken Hackenmack when you need him?

  5. Great read. Thanks.

If Killebrew puts some serious hurt on McGee, and the aggies aren’t on the Horns’ end of the field when they walk off 15 yards, I will nod my head and smirk knowingly.

If he does, it’ll be the first good hit I’ve seen him lay on someone all season. He seems to be content merely “observing” the action on the field rather than being a part of it.

Brickhorn stole my line. I’d kill every single Barker to have Bull Reese for this week. But then I’d have just killed TexasFootball and why didn’t I just pick him to begin with?

  11. Oh if only this genius high school position coach could have coordinated the defense instead of the guy who won 27 straight and a NC at Texas, or instead of the guy who co-coordinated several successful defenses here—except when injuries mounted, which if the coaches’ fault of course—and has produced multiple NFL DBs at Texas. And get HenryJames to help you with LB alignments. This jocksniffer obviously knows better than an actual college DC. ChrisApplewhite can draw up some gay little graphics and make you all feel like you actually know WTF you’re talking about.

Why isn’t Mack beating down your doors geniuses???

He sent Killebrew with my job offer but he went to the wrong house.

  13. We should hire rpongett’s Tivo to be our next defensive coordinator.

  14. “Most DC’s would try to make McGee beat them throwing the ball.”

    Excellent gameplan!!!

“This team is well coached. Watching Penders teams play was like going down to Harlem to watch pick up basketball. ”
Just one example of a well coached defensive team. A 22 point run KU and as Self said that does not happen everyday. This is not a well coached team.

    The General,

I think the WR screen you were looking for could be seen at ~1:55. However, this was an effective play, so we really don’t know how he will take the blow from an unblocked defender 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Yeah your right, penders teams were at least fun to watch play. Barnes offense is pretty bad not as bad as Tom’s but its all relative to who is watching the worst offense in Texas history.

“His teams did not play D, did not box out, and were generally unsound in the fundamentals of the game.”

Our hoops team is the basketball version of Major League.

    Jake Taylor = Damion James
    Pedro Cerrano = Dexter Pittman
Willie Mays Hays = Avery Bradley
    Roger Dorn = Justin Mason
Isuro Tanaka (Major League II) = Dogus Balbay
Rube Baker (Major Leauge II) = Jordan Hamilton

If Craig Way starts drinking whiskey during the broadcasts, it’ll complete the analogy.

Nice job Hiphop. Very nice to win what is probably the toughest game on the schedule handily, although the Hawks obviously caught UT at a good time.

The Morningstar FT was terrible and hilarious. He said the ball was wet, which clearly means Texas was cheating somehow. Would the second chance off balance leaner

I don’t think McCoy played anywhere near the level of Suh and the numbers make it clear that he did not. Suh had twice as many tackles (77-31), sacks (11-5) and nearly tackles for loss (22-14.5). Suh also broke up 10 passes, if he gets stonewalled on the rush he doesn’t allow it to take

EP, I get your point, but I don’t think the fact that Texas hasn’t won a tourney came as an underdog doesn’t support it. Teams are favored because they are better. The odds that they win are greater than those who are not favored. It’s not like Texas goes into games with a secret weapon

I don’t think it’s a case of RB not being able to coach, or doing a poor job of coaching. If you read the entirety of Katz’ blog post, he clearly sounds like a coaching searching for answers — answers that come in the form of players contributing, doing what they are coached to do.
