Greg Davis simplifies the offense

Posted by HenryJames on October 2nd, 2007 under Football

So we’re going to scrap some of our more mundane plays that don’t work?

Nope.

So we’re going to change up our pre-snap audibles that allow a defense to force us into doing what they want?

Nope.

According to the Statesman Davis is going to simplify some of the checks and reads that McCoy does at the line, and McCoy won’t be allowed to ‘freelance’ as much with the receivers assignments and routes.

“You want to give your players as many options as you can at the line of scrimmage and post snap,” Davis said. “But at the same time, sometimes you’re better off everybody knowing exactly what you’re doing, even if you’re running into a stacked deck, so to speak.”

It’s important that both Colt and Jermichael Finley know that Finley is running the 5 yard curl.

The defense already does.

    This is actually getting laughable.

  2. Next week, Davis will announce that, because hand signals are too complicated, the plays will be called using giant cue cards.

  3. Not to state the obvious, but I really really really really don’t think the answer here is to make our offense more simple.

I mean, really. Stoops just took that quote into the bathroom with him.

  4. Sir Henry –

Bill Little says that the OU game will be decided by turnovers and the kicking game. What do you think about that?

    I know what I think.

  5. For awhile, I was delighted to see your name on the internet again, Henry. Now you bring me something that moves my inner soul to kill the messenger slowly and with acute attention to infliction of pain.

I can’t imagine a more absurd observation than this one by Davis. Simplify an offense that only runs about six different plays and whose assignments are better understood by opposing defenses than our own offense.

Does he really look at his players and say, “The problem is, we’re making it too hard for you. So, come get a hug and we’ll simplify the offense and start cutting your meat for you at dinner.”

    Yikes.

We can only pray that this is all part of the master plan to lull Stoops into a false sense of security.

We can pray, but God will laugh at us.

Now it’s Colt’s fault because he’s not smart enough to know how/when to check off.

    Transfer of blame. Beautiful.

How ugly is this trainwreck going to get? I ask that about both this Saturday’s game AND the remainder of this season.

Then again, maybe Mack & Greg should be given credit for recognizing that, after sustaining three concussions in his last eight games, Colt needs a simpler game plan and fewer options. The dizziness, confusion and blurred vision that he’s grappling with now are making it much harder to sort through the pre-snap reads.

In seriousness, I’m getting legitimately concerned here about Colt’s health. I question whether this staff places the proper value on the question of whether he’s risking serious neurological injuries by playing.

I sense desperation on Mack’s part, and I would not put it past him to send Colt onto the field in a vain attempt salve his bruised ego. I pray that I’m wrong.

How do you simply a playbook that’s small enough to fit in a text message? Rather than the “everyone go deep” play that is the staple of sandlot football, GD will employ the “everyone go wide” offense.

  10. No more 2 yard outs, we are going to simply it and only make the receivers go out 1 yard. They don’t want to make it look like Sweed is taking any plays off that way.

  11. Is Sally responsible for the juice boxes and snacks at halftime or does this rotate with each coach’s wife?

I’m on orange slice duty this weekend guys. Mrs. Akina is bringing the Capri Sun.

Mack has decided to show the team the Women’s World Cup third place game involving our ladies soccer team to show the boys how to bounce back from a tough loss.

Coach Stoops likes to take his team to dog fights before the RRS but Mack won’t have his boys around anything that untoward.

I don’t even know why they keep score in these games. Haven’t we evolved beyond that? These games are about learning respect for your opponent and good sportsmanship not wins or losses.

  13. Nice.

  14. sally, is it true that greg davis gives mack better head than you do?

I think the main reason you only scored 7 points at home against my Ags last year was that your offense was simple enough for our defense to figure out. Note that we didn’t shut anybody down last year (although we were better than the year before). That coupled with Colt being injured – why Mack didn’t play Snead still is a mystery.

  28. At this point, all i can really do is laugh. I’ll be drunk before kickoff on Saturday. That way it won’t hurt as much.

I wonder what play OU will rape us with that we will put in our offense and run against Iowa State this year. Dave Lapham wants to know too.

Kilgore Trout – is a literary character from Kurt Vonnegut Jr. As far as I know, he never visited Kilgore, Tx, or got it on with a hottie with a Camaro. Kurt is now dead, so it goes.

  36. “I spent a summer in Kilgore, and every jackass I met was an aggy fan.”

That rule applies pretty consistently even outside of Kilgore.

Good team that took number 1 seeded Louisville to the wire in last year’s tournament. Start 3 seniors and two juniors, very athletic. Solid pass first point guard. Their leading scorer was player of the year in the conference.

Good club that plays multiple defenses.

colorado ag, Utah State is as athletic as Nebraska. You’ll be fine as long as they don’t go 16 for 31 from three.

Siena, on the other hand, is going to beat you like you stole something. Maybe not, but the Saints should win.

Possibly. However, I’m telling you – the beauty of these intergame lines is that when you see that all-too-familiar big early game lead that you know will evaporate down the stretch as soon as the team starts regressing to their 3 point shooting mean, there’s some money to be made.
