NFL Trivial Stats – Volume 1

Posted by CallKevin on September 25th, 2007 under Football, Recruiting

I suspect one has to be more than a bit odd to find any of this interesting, which makes it just perfect for me. I was the type of kid who studied the statistics on the back of his Topps baseball cards in the 70’s (except for the Cincinnati Reds cards that I glued inside my school notebook to preserve them forever–ugh). I think Total Football II is an important part of any fans library, and believe that the Book of Lists and the Guinness Book of World Records should be required reading for all young men of a certain age.

I spent some time this week “borrowing” from the work of the giants who manage this site: www.localsports.ca/nfl_rosters. Someday I’ll figure out how to repay them. With the borrowed data, I’ve learned a bit I thought worth sharing. I’ll cover, briefly, a variety of topics and see if there’s any desire for a more in-depth analysis.

1) There are 2164 players on NFL rosters today. This includes all active players, practice squad members, suspended, physically unable to perform, etc.

2) Those 2164 players came from 287 different schools.

3) 101 of those 287 schools produced one player each.

4) Five of those 287 schools produced at least 44 players each (1.7% of the schools; 11.1% of the players).

5) 10 additional schools produced at least 30 players each (3.5% of the schools; 16.3% of the players)

6) Based upon the 401 NFL rookies, you’d figure the following schools did well last year:

Florida (11) [13-1, SEC champs, National Champs, #1 AP]

Ohio State (11) [12-1, Big 10 champs, national runner-up, #2 AP]

Notre Dame (9) [10-3, Sugar Bowl loss , #17 AP]

Texas (9) [10-3, Big 12 South runner-up, Alamo Bowl win, #13 AP]

Michigan (8) [11-2, Big 10 runner-up, Rose Bowl loss, #8 AP]

Georgia (7) [9-4, #23 AP]

Louisville (7) [12-1, Orange Bowl win, #6 AP]

Michigan State (7) [4-8, new coach hired, unranked]

Arizona (6) [6-6, unranked]

Auburn (6) [11-2, #9 AP]

California (6) [10-3, #14 AP]

Hawaii (6) [11-3, unranked AP]

Maryland (6) [9-4, unranked AP]

Penn State (6) [9-4, #24 AP]

Tennessee (6) [9-4, #25 AP]

USC (6) [11-2, #4 AP]

7) Top 15 AP schools with fewer NFL rookies, suggesting some were still loaded for this season, and others played in an easier conference:

AP #3 LSU (5)

AP #5 Boise State (4)

AP #7 Wisconsin (2)

AP #10 West Virginia (1)

AP #11 Oklahoma (3)

AP #12 Rutgers (4)

AP #15 Arkansas (5)

8 ) 138 players have 11+ years in the NFL; 520 have 6-10 seasons; 619 have 3-5.

9) 2 NFL players admit to being 5′6; three to 5′7; 26 to 5′8; 56 to 5′9; 155 to 5′10. The two shortest are both from the Big 12. We may not make ‘em big, but they’re tough. :-)

10 ) 3 NFL players claim heights of 6-9–two play tackle for the Baltimore Ravens.

Loss in Waco = Win in Kansas City?

Tonight the Bears get their second crack of the year at Kansas State. The first time we played K State in Waco, we managed to lose the game despite being more efficient than K State offensively. While K State did outshoot us by 9%, and outrebounded us 36-32,

    Thanks, St. Emilion.

That’s a good choice, but UNC was so good that Ty didn’t stand out as much as he should have.

Mateen Cleaves, Khalid El Amin, Ty Edney, those were some other tournament war daddies that come to mind along with Lawson.

Trips Right’s 33 volume Decline and Fall of Texas Basketball has not only been required post-disaster therapy for the Longhorn basketball fan (what is your hourly rate, anyway?) but also merits combat pay from BC’s executive management. But there is one organ left in the vivisection of Rick Barnes that keeps bugging me: his arguably atrocious

Andrey Arshavin has a website where he takes questions from his fans and, apparently, types his own responses.  It is AMAZING.

There is really almost nothing that I can add to this, but it’s so great it deserves its own post.  Among the highlights — Arshavin giving marriage advice, Arshavin discussing whether he considers rain to

Thanks Whiskey, but I’m too busy tryinig to verify if Colt and Shipley were indeed room mates.

It’s a joke. They always talked about him boxing, though I agree, he’s a tough dude. I loved the way he fearlessly returned punts straight up the gut at 100mph.

I absolutely hate Rick Reilly. He’s the single most annoying ESPN “analyst”… by far. He would be at home on CNN.

But since the following sentence appears to be right on the tip of your tongue the entire article, I’ll go ahead and say it. Fuck liberals. Look no further than the UK if you

The best guards are puported to come from Chicago, Illinois because in the windy city, you either score at the goal, or you risk having our J pushed two feet off the mark thanks to the 30 mph winds whipping off Lake Michigan.

To that point about guard play, watching the Big East tournament

Wow. Orangebloods got ahold of some videos of Mike Leach’s after game speeches. Good Lord. More f-bombs than a Quniton Tarintino movie. After the Baylor game – language is highly NSFW:

Yeah man, Northside v. Southside is old, old news, as is the bas blood there. Booker T is up around Acres Homes, and Yates is in the 3rd Ward.

Yeah, but here’s the thing — you have to have some way to resolve draws. Endless extra time is impractical, because these games are played in the midst of regular league and domestic cup features — you just can’t play that much extar football. Penalty shots are even more arbitrary than away goals.

Mistakes from nerves should not be a reason to unjustly allow one goal to count as two. It goes against the true laws of the game. No other sport has a “point” (goal in this case) scored by one team counting for more than what it would for the other team. It

Tweety and Lace are passionate. They are great team leaders. I love it when I see them jabbering creole at UT, showing they are absolutely not intimidated even though for some reason everyone else in the country thinks they should be. This includes the officials – John Higgens really needs to get

Is it just me, or does Kansas have a really annoying tendency (for fans and opponents, I would think) to just play with teams for a while and struggle along before finally going in for the kill? I can’t decide how much of this they control and how much of it is inconsistency.

I am with ipowers on this one. I would rather go down with guys who give a crap then to let guys play who are so selfish they jog back on every defensive fast break . It just comes down to the character of the team and the chemistry. Hamilton and Brown

The Hawks…well, they’ll just be trying to win, but not for any particular reason other than that they enjoy doing so.

Perfect phrase to capture how much this means, not that much.

The main positives I am taking from this year is that Powell is going to be a great player, and that Nobles and Bryant started to show some good improvement and will be contributors.

I’ve been looking forward to tonight’s game since the conclusion of our last one. As I posted on my blog, I think A&M will be hurt by the loss of Dash Harris for this game. He may or may not be healthy enough to play, but he should not play either way.
