Liveblogging the Mack Brown press conference – UCF

Press conference is being delayed a few minutes while Mack speaks to a couple of players. The police are now leading the players away in handcuffs. Cleve is no Louis Gossett Jr.

Reporter

“The way the weekend started I felt like Chevy Chase with the Griswolds on vacation. It was absolutely crazy.”

The way the game went I felt like I was watching Chevy Chase’s talk show. It was absolutely brutal.

Talking about Jamaal Charles.

“He was running aggressively when he had the fumbles, the ball wasn’t sloppy, we just need to do a better job hanging on because he has got a really aggressive running style…”

We’re trying to coach that out of him.

“We are going back and looking at all of our rushing plays that were less than three yards and see why.”

Reporter

“We are going back and studying all of the things we have done in the red zone in the past and why we haven’t scored as easily.”

Reporter

Asked about the rushing defense.

“I think he (Kevin Smith) is a NFL player because the runs he made are great cuts. He would start one side and we would over pursue and he would cut all the way back.”

I’m glad our linebacker coaching is at least making someone look like an NFL prospect.

Asked about Rice.

“This will be a National Championship come Saturday.”

Talk about lowering expectations. Oh. He meant for the Owls.

“Spike said that if you can’t watch a team on film if they are struggling, play Texas and they will pick it up.”

Yeah, well Spike hasn’t made a good film since ‘Do the Right Thing.’

On the return of Billy Pittman, Sergio Kindle and Henry Melton.

“They have handled it really well…I know they are very excited about coming back, and we need it.”

When Pittman gets to use his friend’s car again, he promised to be the designated driver for Kindle and Melton.

Ed Clements just intimated that Central Florida might not be better than the 1986 Chicago Bears. Mack refuses to answer his question. Cleve is channeling his inner John Chaney and has to be restrained. The press forms a phalanx with their pens. Suzanne Halliburton is Ephialtes.

Cooler heads prevail.

Bill Little will compare Clements to Benedict Arnold in his next column.

Asked about how the team has been able to grow.

“You have to continue to get better and to fix the things that are broken and we have to make sure that they understand all of the things that are good because the standard here is pretty high and winning is not enough for some, but it is for us.”

I can’t believe some of our fans aren’t happy with this team.

On the number of upsets in college football.

“Who would of ever expected 0-2 Utah to beat UCLA 44-6?”

Anybody familiar with Karl Dorrell.

Asked about the number of close games thus far.

“If you blow out the other team, everybody gets to play and everybody is happy.”

Only angry people win football games by less than a touchdown.

“As a coaching staff and as players, you are not as apt to feel an urgency to fix things.”

If there’s one thing you can say about this staff, it’s that they feel a sense of urgency to fix things.

On the linebackers.

“We would still like to play Jared [Norton] and Roddrick [Muckelroy] more.”

Apparently there are unseen forces at work. The coaches want to play them, but the football gods are directly intervening in the affairs of men.

“We are hoping that we will get to start rotating like we wanted to and that is every other series with the guys.”

Starting the week after OU.

On developing the younger players.

“We still haven’t gotten enough of those guys in and we would like to. It seems like every time we try to start to, something has happened to put us in bad shape.”

Usually the play of the starters.

“We have to do it, we have to go ahead and put them in the game and not worry about it.”

Yes.

    That was exactly what I thought when I heard Mack say that. It is like some demented football version of Groundhog Day.

    The backups don’t play because the game is close. The game is close because the starters aren’t making plays. Around and around it goes. Over and over. Someone please get me out of this nightmare.

    I think some of the starters intentionally get out of position just to keep the game close, because they know that our coaches don’t have the nuts to put the backups in when the game is in doubt. It’s genius, really.

    Not a bad plan at all. I don’t even know what my motivation is like if I am Jared Norton. Eventually he is going to feel like Milton in Office Space.
