I think we learned today that no team is really a mirror image of Missouri, even if Clemson is about as close as it gets. Unless you have significantly better/more talented athletes, if you try to run with the Tigers, you will lose. This team is so much fun to watch in games

Doc, the turnovers seemed to do the trick – there were great big chunks of time when Mizzou didn’t even have to get into a half court offense.

This is what made this season so bizarre for me. This has never been a problem for Barnes’ teams. But I actually questioned this team’s heart and desire to play together

Travis Ford spent the 2nd half channeling his inner Rick Barnes — lot’s of standing around on offense while one player tries to generate something off a ball screen — then taking a forced shot.

This is the worst coached team ever in Barnes era. Period.
Worst defense over the whole season,
Offense sucked big time and the bench coaching was horrible, ransom’s attitude was better then the coach’s overall this season.

advertisers think they will probably get some deals for the additional 32 games that would be added. The feeling is that an ESPN would disount rates somewhat, since they already have a dual revenue stream — advertising dollars and subscription fees.
It’s all about content for ESPN — even mediocre content.

So far on Day Two, no buzzer beaters, but there was the obligatory #12 over #5 with Cornell thumping Temple 78-65, but the Ivy League school was everyone’s “inside” pick for an upset. Still the day hasn’t come close to generating the action that Thursday had.

I wasn’t trying to say they quit. They just didn’t play hard a lot of the time. Lazy = lack of effort. Example, our transition defense was about 75% effort and 25% stupidity. We loafed down court a lot. The kids didn’t like to lose so they would fight back,

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.
The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.

I appreciate the effort, but there are some really glaring inaccuracies (on the MIzzou side, I don’t know enough about Illinois). First, Weatherspoon has been the class of camp and there is no chance in hell he loses his job. Second, Keck has not only not been the “best player in camp” he has actually slipped to third team and is injured. I’ll tell you right now that the LB position will be significantly upgraded this year…neither Bacon nor Harrington were natural linebackers (both started at safety). The one spot on defense that is certianly weaker is DE. The interior of the line will be stronger (Ziggy Hood played the 2nd half of the season with a broken foot, and we added Charles Gaines, plus a year of experience for Lo Williams and Baston). And William Moore, the FS (SS last year), is the most athletic player on the team, and one of the top 5 safeties in the league.
I think we’ll struggle on offense against defenses with a strong front four. That is essentially OU and nobody else.
Like I said, I appreciate the effort, but when I read things that are blatantly, glaringly in accurate (Weatherspoon and Keck stuff), it makes it hard for me to trust the Illinois information.

You didn’t mention anything about Ill and blitzing. Some of their fans were speculating that the Injuns could tear up Daniel’s passing with heavy doses of blitzing: lots of blitzers, lots of times. I think our TEs would make that a terrible idea, what say you?

Sarge, ask Mike Leach if he likes his spread blitzed. He’d take it all day long if he knew a team would line up and blitz the majority of the snaps. In fact, considering Illinois’ secondary personnel, and the compliment of skill position talent the Tiger’s bring to this game, I think an excessive amount of blitzing creates a perfect storm that can find the illini down big early on.
So many things the Tigers can do to counter…max protect with two TE’s, run quick WR screens to athletic wideouts running behind Coffman and/or a flexed out Rucker, traditional screens to a prototypical screen back in Temple, and/or lean on an uber-experienced spread QB in Daniel to make quick and correct decisions with the rock for big plays.
No, if you’re Illinois, you have to turn this game into classic Big 10 football. Sound and disciplined on D, keeping everything in front and arriving violently when you get there. Frustrate Daniel into check downs in hopes he’ll make mistakes by getting greedy. Gap control in the run game forcing Temple to make some yards after contact. Why blitz and turn it into a track meet?
On offense, they need to value possessions and run the ball to control the clock. Keep Williams in 3rd and manageable so his mobility can remain a weapon. Any 3rd and long I have if I’m Zook, I quick kick. No shit.
The worst thing that can happen to Illinois is they get down early and Williams is forced to be something he’s not. It only snowballs from there. I think that will happen and if Zook is blitz happy it will happen sooner rather than later. Bet on it.
